Hotels? Sorted. We curate our stays to ensure you bed down in unique spots in great locations. The trip includes 5 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 4 dinners. And don’t worry – vegans and veggies also dine like royalty. On top of that, EVERY SINGLE activity we list in our itineraries is included in the price; no hidden extras or secret charges. Finally, you’ll get a dedicated tour leader from start to finish. We can’t guarantee they’ll be hangover-free. We can guarantee they’ll be cool as cool can be.
Whizz into Ngurah Rai International Airport and step straight into a private transfer. You'll weave through the infamous Balinese traffic for about an hour or so. The destination? Canggu. Uber-cool Canggu. This is now the hipster capital of Southeast Asia (move over Chiang Mai); part salt-in-your-hair surf town, part digital nomad mecca. There will be plenty of time to explore tomorrow. First, though, it's time to meet the crew. The whole first evening is dedicated to getting to know your new travel buddies and tour leaders. There will be food, there will be drink, there will be good times.
We begin our first full day in Bali how everyone should begin their first full day in Bali: With a surf. It's a short drive to Batu Bolong Beach, where we know a top-rated surf school that specialises in packages for beginner surfers. The waves here are fun, mellow wedges that are great to learn on. You'll be addicted in no time! Later, we swap surfboards for incense sticks as we hop over to the legendary Tanah Lot Temple. There's a good chance you've already seen this incredible Hindu shrine on postcards of Bali, set on its own salt-washed rock above the Indian Ocean. After that, bedtime can wait because Canggu's super-cool beach clubs will be begging to make an appearance.
It's time to ditch the waves and the Balinese beaches for the wild inland of the island. Our base there will be the arty town of Ubud. Before we get to the hotel, though, we'll freshen up with a swim in a roaring waterfall at Tegenungan, one of the most dramatic waterfalls in all of south Bali, no less. After check-in, we cruise straight up to the Tegalalang Rice Fields. Many a classic Bali Instagram shot has been taken here on "I <3 Bali" swings overlooking sweeping fields of green. The day finishes with a stroll through the Monkey Forest, a mystical complex of 700-year-old Hindu temples that's been colonised by a cheeky crew of crab-eating macaques. (Watch your valuables – they love to steal!)
What better way to wake up in Ubud than with a trip to a proper Balinese coffee plantation? You'll get to taste the local specialty Kintamani beans but also the legendary Kopi Luwak, a type of coffee made from beans that have passed through – ahem! – a civet weasel. There's also a small tour about the coffee growing process and the history of coffee in the region. The culinary theme continues into the afternoon as you head for a Balinese cooking lesson. You'll sizzle up skewers of satay ayum and douse them in peanut sauce, stir-fry real nasi goreng rice, and concoct fiery chili sambal.
The north coast of Bali beckons in the form of Lovina. We'll get there but we also make the most of the drive up – it's littered with some of the most jaw-dropping locations on the island. How does a pitstop at the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple sound, for photos of a mystical Hindu stupa reflected in the waters of a volcanic lake? How about a moment at the Bali Handara Gate, one of the most-photographed locations in Asia? Once that's done, we cruise into the black-sands beaches of Lovina to see a more relaxed side of the Isle of the Gods. The region is known for its dolphins, so keep your eyes peeled for those out at sea. There are also chilled reggae bars to help you usher in the night.
It’s a super early start today as the group gets picked up around 2am to be driven deep into the heart of Bali. The aim? The base of Mount Batur, the second-highest volcano on the island. The trek to the top starts at little Toyobungkah Village before weaving through clusters of lush jungle and coffee plantations to high ridges. We make it to the top in time to watch the sunrise, which is one seriously jaw-dropping moment as the light begins to glow behind neighbouring Mount Agung. After descending, we check into a lakeside hotel under the volcano for some hard-earned R&R.
Green, green Sidemen is a highland town in eastern Bali. Still very much off the beaten path, it’s slowly entering the limelight thanks to its idyllic waterfalls and rice-paddy hikes. We check off both of those. You’ll hit the Gembleng Waterfall, which soars over 40 meters through the jungle and offers naturally made infinity pools. Later, you’ll get a local guide to take you around the farm fields, and learn loads about growing everything from rice to avocados. The day ends with a happy hour beer overlooking Mount Agung - Sidemen has some of the best head-on views of Bali’s biggest mountain anywhere on the island!
All hail the Gili Islands. This is where central Indonesia does its best impression of the Caribbean. It takes a whole morning to get over to them on the speedboats but boy is it worth it. You'll be greeted by long runs of talcum-powder-white sand that's framed by lanky coconut palms and seas of see-through blue. We'll be staying on Gili Trawangan, the liveliest of the three. Take the afternoon to find your Zen – that's what the Gilis are all about. Then, hit the bars if you're feeling the Bintang urge.
Boat tour time in the Gilis. You'll hit all three islands in a single day, starting with the yoga and honeymoon mecca of Gili Meno. That's got probably the best beaches of the whole chain – think glinting, pure white runs of sand that slope into coral lagoons packed with sea turtles. After snorkelling sessions with everyone's favourite shelled sea creature, you head east to Gili Air. There's a bona fide Indonesian town over there, woven together with cycling lanes that are a joy to explore. As sunset creeps near, we rendezvous back on the beach on Gili T to kick-start a night of partying. Yeehaw!
Salt-washed Bingin Beach is one of Bali's slickest surfer hangouts. The town drops down a 100-metre-cliff with boho bars selling Bintang beers clutching the rocks, offering 180-degree views of the Indian Ocean. A sliver of sand appears between the reefs at low tide below. It's a great place to kick back and top up the tan. There's also a surf break here for intermediates and loads of board rentals to match. We'll take the afternoon to chill (it's a long trip in from the Gilis) and then head up to watch the incredible Kecak Fire Dance at the Uluwatu Temple. It's one of the most moving cultural events in Bali, telling haunting tales from the Hindu Ramayana.
The final port of call on our 12-day Bali trip is the bustling resort town of Kuta. Known for its shopping and nightlife, the spot is also neatly right next to Bali Airport for catching those onward flights. But the show’s not over yet! Nope. Head over to Waterbom Bali to get the adrenaline a-pumping. It’s a mega-fun aqua park with rides that bear names like Smashdown 2 and Green Vipers. At night, we celebrate an amazing trip and new friends. Don’t worry - the Kuta nightlife is off the hook!
One last breakfast with the crew and then it’s time to leave. We’ll help you organise a taxi transfer to take you the short distance to the airport if needed. Or you can stick around Bali to explore more of this jungle-dressed, surf-washed paradise in the Indian Ocean. Your choice.
